After having to cancel her North American tour as it just began and return directly into quarantine Siv Jakobsen was faced with a few more tough decisions.
Her forthcoming sophomore LP A Temporary Soothing was experiencing manufacturing delays, record stores were shutting, and she had another big European tour coming up to promote the record. Everything had to be pushed back to August and Siv was left cooped up in her Oslo home with her boyfriend and her old dog- suddenly with nothing to do in what was meant to be one of the busiest periods of her life.
However, as she started to connect with people via live-stream shows she realized that her new music had a special context she could never have predicted. She wrote and recorded an album meant to offer A Temporary Soothing – to tackle anxiety, stress and feelings of isolation. Songs took on new meaning and she wanted to share another single from her new record that seemed like it could have been written for this new situation we all found ourselves in – locked in our houses.
“Anywhere Else’ is a song about anxiety. Not the panicky, all-consuming kind that often results in a severe physical reaction, but a smoldering and quiet sort of anxiety, a sort of uncomfortable buzzing in the body that never quite leaves you be. It took me many years to understand that this also is a form of anxiety. It can be relatively quiet, but it’s there – always.
“This has had me in a soft grip for a long while, and I wrote ‘Anywhere Else’ before I understood what it really was that I was experiencing. I thought it was normal to feel a bubbling sense of fear almost all the time. It can make me have a hard time deciding seemingly small things like what I’m going to eat, where I’m going to go on a walk, what coffee shop I’m going to go to, what I should wear, what I should do with my day, etc.”
Siv’s LP features collaborations with a handful of great musicians Siv has come to love such as producer Chris Bond (Ben Howard, Nick Mulvey) and mixing engineer Zach Hanson (Bon Iver, Tallest Man on Earth, Waxahatchee). It has been rescheduled for August 21st and her release tour will now take place in September.
