US singer-songwriter Steve Gunn has announced details of his new record The Unseen In Between, along with a new single and Spring 2019 European headline tour dates

New Moon is a lushly textured track of melodic psych-folk, with wistful harmonica and stormy guitars gradually building up to a vivid crescendo – take a listen below…

New record The Unseen In Between, to be released Jan 18th, is Steve’s fourth solo album and second on Matador, following a stream of revered DIY releases over the past few years, alongside exploratory collaborations with artists as diverse as Mike Cooper, Hiss Golden Messenger, Kurt Vile, and Michael Chapman

The Unseen In Between came to be in the aftermath of the passing away of Steve’s father and namesake following a two year struggle with cancer. During his illness, he and his father grew closer, speaking openly and listening to one another’s life experiences for the first time, becoming not just father and son but real friends. In the wake of his death, just after the release of 2016’s Eyes On The Lines, Steve struggled with his newfound responsibilities as a bandleader and recording artist. He needed to recalibrate, refocus, and get back to the basics of what he loved about making music. An unexpected step in this direction came when he was introduced to Tony Garnier, Bob Dylan’s musical director and longest standing bandmate, who expressed an interest to come onboard for the new album sessions. Besides bringing his deft and tactful bass to the proceedings, he also became a kind of mentor and reassuring presence for Steve

This sense of musical renewal and emotional complexity is immediately evident – it’s his most beautifully recorded and poignant work to date, with the intricate yet inherently melodic guitar-playing and lush textures captured in all their rich detail, backdropping Steve’s sensitive, euphonious voice. The lyrics are subtly evocative throughout, inspired by nature and imbued with the elusive sense of verging on something revelatory that’s just out of reach: “i see a glimmer / across the wall through the mirror / past the streets beyond the weather / to that place that no one seems to know”
