Christof van der Ven releases new track ‘A Darker Light’ this week, lifted from forthcoming second album You Were The Place – and today, we are delighted to premiere the new single
Holland born Christof van der Ven releases new track ‘A Darker Light’ – the second cut to be lifted from his second full length album You Were The Place, out September 6th via his own imprint, Planet Zog Records
Take a listen below…
New track ‘A Darker Light’ brings things to a more melancholy place. Reverb-laden acoustic guitars are paired with a glitchy slow-burning rhythm section, with Christof reminiscing about a conversation with his Mum, at a cross-roads moment shortly after his romance had come to an end.
“This is a song about a conversation that I had late at night with my mum after some wine. I was looking for an answer, a way out of the emotional mess I was in. She offered her wisdom and helped me get over that mental hurdle,” Christof states.
Written and recorded over the three month period immediately following the end of a brief and intense fling, the tracks on You Were The Place stand as an unfiltered knee-jerk reaction; an unadulterated overspill of emotions in the aftermath. Van der Ven captures the subtle, soft textures of recent memories, using the album as a vehicle to examine his confusion and frustration around this evolving heartache, as well as the pain and humour that comes from shared vulnerability. The album tracks are written from a mixture of perspectives, including friends, family, colleagues as well as his own.
Recorded, produced and mixed by Marcus Hamblett (Villagers, James Holden & The Animal Spirits, Bear’s Den), You Were The Place features instrumentation contributions from good friends: Tommy Heap (Matthew & The Atlas), Jools Owen (Bear’s Den), Tommy Sheen, Emma Gatrill (Matthew & The Atlas, This Is The Kit, Rozi Plain) and Andrew Stuart-Buttle (Lucy Rose, Rolo Tomassi)
Splitting his time between working as a chef, playing as a touring musician with Bear’s Den as well as releasing and touring his own music – Christof now bases himself in London – alongside a strong friendship group of fellows musicians and artists
