New Band: Liemba

Brighton based acoustic powerhouse Liemba combine classic folk roots with contemporary acoustic/rock influences. Imagine Crosby, Stills and Nash fused with Kings of Convenience, Fleetwood Mac and the Staves. Simon Gledhill, Nelson Day and Damian Best form the backbone of Liemba with their three-part harmonies and intricate guitar interplay.

Liemba began in 2015 when Simon Gledhill and Nelson Day combined to create acoustic music in Brighton, UK. Both have linked influences from the 60-70’s period and used that backdrop to produce some beautiful guitar and harmony work on the debut EP “All Costs”. In 2016, after UK and European tours, “Burning Wicks” was recorded in Brighton during the winter. They developed the sound further by adding three part harmony with Damian Best on vocals and recording early experiments on drums and bass played by the trio.

Early 2017 saw them recording a live, filmed acoustic EP with “Paul Winn” at Brighton Electric Studios (Gomez, Passenger, The Kooks) after wanting to capture the unity of the trio in motion. Comparisons to CSNY and The Eagles have been drawn from these recordings and they served as a good platform to play festivals and build momentum over the summer. It was decided in 2018 a full band recording featuring Brighton regulars Alfie Weedon on double Bass and Fred Hills on drums would help establish and develop Liemba’s “bigger” sound. The 4 tracks led to live appearances at The Great Escape, solidifying Liemba’s reputation as one of the best acts on the Brighton music scene.

In 2019 Fred Hills (Michael Baker/ Ellie Ford) and Joe Woodham (Jouis) were brought into the fold to record a full band EP which marks the band’s 5th independently produced release. The Ever Evolving EP was recorded by Rob at Ford Lane Studios (Royal Blood, Just Jack, Dmob Happy) over two balmy summer days in July. The band recorded live to capture the core of their sound and then Gledhill and Day spent the next month adding subtle texture and mixing the tracks. The tracks were mastered at Homesick Studios. Alice Humphreys also filmed the process and created three powerful live videos of each of the tracks which give a good insight into the band as a whole.
