New Artist: Jonny Morgan

Jonny Morgan is an alternative indie Americana folk singer/songwriter who clearly struggles having to describe what specific genre he falls into. Jonny aspires to make music that is vulnerable, incorporating the real, raw emotions of everyday life into his gritty acoustic singer/songwriter style. Unsigned and fearlessly independent, Jonny endeavours to take his sound back to basics, reflecting on the reason he felt the pull to create music in the first place. Influenced by songwriting powerhouses Bon Iver, Ray LaMontagne and vintage Don Henley, Jonny Morgan’s new single ‘Hurt Me’ combines his talent for vocalising the weight of relationships and life experiences with poetic lyrics and warm, layered, ambient sounds.

Jonny spends most of his time in the UK bouncing between London and his hometown of Bath. Just a stone’s throw from his beloved west country town, Jonny made his debut at Glastonbury in 2019. His last single ‘Your Touch’ was highly featured on BBC Introducing, who remarked that “[Jonny] is one to watch with this ridiculously catchy tune”. Alongside being a Sofar Sounds alumni and favourite, he has supported Turin brakes, Wildwood Kin and Rob Vincent.

After a European tour of Sofar Sounds shows in 2019, which spanned over 15 countries, Jonny took his music to the States. Having grown up regularly visiting the US, Jonny was infatuated with the sounds of Americana, blues and grassroots music, developing an unsubtle love for the genre. ‘Hurt Me’ is almost a homecoming for the soul of Jonny’s music. After a surprise exchange of direct messages on Instagram, Jonny found himself flying out to the US in December 2019 to record his new single alongside Americana artist Joel Levi at his studio in Nashville, Tennessee.

Whilst still honouring his roots and performing stripped back shows in New England on the way, Jonny spent time crafting and investing in new relationships in the mecca of Folk and Americana. In 2020, Jonny is now turning his attention to releasing as much authentic music as possible, starting with ‘Hurt Me’, released last month on 28th February.
