Calum Read is a multi-instrumentalist and singer, having started performing regularly as a guitarist, both as a solo artist and in a variety of projects, across the UK and Ireland since he was 16. At 23, a year after completing a degree in Folk and Traditional Music at Newcastle University, he took the decision to pursue music as a full-time career.
Calum’s music is heavily influenced by traditional music, from his Scottish and Irish roots, as well as folk songwriters such as Richard Thompson and John Martyn, as well as taking in much inspiration from a wide variety of genres, such as rock, world and indie music, while armed with a loop pedal and effects to give his solo music a completely unique style.
When the UK went into lockdown in March due to COVID-19, and performance opportunities stopped, Calum moved onto a canal boat where, with limited equipment and resources, he recorded and produced his debut release entirely independently (Long Cool Girl EP, so named after the boat), which showcases the diversity and talent in his playing, composing and arranging.
