For our latest ‘My 5 Biggest Influences’ feature, we spoke to Joshua Radin, who heads out on a European tour later this month.

‘My 5 Biggest Influences’ is when we talk to some of our favourite upcoming and established artists, delving into their greatest influences and inspirations, to see how bands, records, tracks, friends & family, hobbies and even environments have impacted on their work and music.

More about Joshua’s tour below, but first, here are his 5 Biggest Influences…

My Parents

They have always been supportive of my desire to lead an artistic life. And they also played the best music at home when I was young, so they helped form my tastes.

It has always been a big part of my life. I’ve always wanted to read the novels that shaped generations, classic books. Some of my favorite novels are:

“The Brothers Karamazov”
“The Glass Bead Game”
“Anna Karenina”
“Sentimental Education”

Art Museums

I grew up painting a lot, so trips to the art museums have always been inspiring for me. I seem to gravitate to painters from the late 1800’s to about 1960. Cezanne, Picasso, Matisse and Kandinsky especially.

I’d have to say that walking around Paris has been incredibly influential in my creative life. I have a tradition when I finish an album whereby I fly to Paris and spend a week walking the city, eating in cafes, people watching, going to museums, bicycling around with a baguette in the front basket and eating all the cheese I can stomach.

Malibu Beach

The beach in Malibu has become a spot that helps me relax, think, read, play guitar and zen-out. Whenever I’m plugged up creatively, I go out to Malibu and reconnect with the ocean.
