Album Review: Van William – Countries

What better way to kick off 2k18 than by welcoming some fresh musical finds and revisiting old folky friends I hear you ask?! There is none! But fear not dear friends for you are in luck; part-time singer songwriter, part-time commercial fisherman Van William has kicked off his new year in the best way possible – dropping his brand new record Countries, for all to hear. It is a record that’s easy on the ear and includes a duet with none other than everyone’s favourite Swedish duo, First Aid Kit.

Countries is an amiable chunk of Americana-folk; though written about heartbreak and political dismay, the record actually makes for very pleasant listening. Gentle and uncontroversial, Van William’s record is the perfect way for new music enthusiasts to ease their way into their annual year-long hunt for new musical talent.

The stand out track on the album is undoubtedly Revolution, where Van William and the Söderberg sisters who make up First Aid Kit create near musical perfection. The song is cutesy yet powerful; and has the potential to become a part of music fans’ soundtrack to the year, and a great commercial success. Other important moments on the album include opening track Before I Found You, acclaimed single Cosmic Sign and The Country.

With smooth vocals and tuneful tracks, Countries is certainly worth a listen. Set to support First Aid Kit on their international tour, Van William looks set to have a great year ahead, and I’m sure this won’t be the last we hear from him.
