New Release: Karine Polwart – Lark In The Clear Air

Today, Karine Polwart has shared another belter from her forthcoming new record A Pocket Of Wind Resistance, due out on November 17th

The album is the musical accompaniment to Karine’s acclaimed self-written, directed & performed theatre production ‘Wind Resistance’, which debuted at last year’s Edinburgh International Festival

Take a listen to Lark In The Clean Air, below…

Speaking about the track (whose lyrics are drawn from the work of Irish poet Sir Samuel Ferguson) , Karine says; “In the spring and summer, Fala Moor is alive with skylarks, floating up and up on invisible shafts of air – and yet, they’re are a red-listed endangered species in the British Isles. The RSPB has responded by encouraging farmers to incorporate skylark “plots” into their fields in order to protect their vulnerable ground nests. In Gaelic, the word for skylark is fosg. It means, literally, open space, including the space above us. When I go to Fala Moor, I get filled up with space”

Both the album & the theatre production were inspired by Karine’s close hand view of thousands of geese migrating to Fala Flow, a small peat bog close to Karine’s home just south of Edinburgh. Fascinated by the way in which the birds took turns within their skeins to create pockets of wind resistance to aid each other’s flight, it prompted Polwart to consider the ways in which humans depend on each other

Karine says; “It’s a meditation on the ways in which we, as humans, protect and care for one another, and for all life, by stepping up, falling back, labouring and resting in our own fashion”

The five-time winner of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards is heading out on tour this Autumn, with a residency at The Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh…
